Volunteer Pasadena was established in 2012 by Mayor John Manlove, according to the City of Pasadena website. It is a program in which citizen volunteer to help the city of Pasadena in the city’s needs: Adopt a Waterway, Adopt a Street, and Adopt a Park, to maintain the city’s parks, streets, and waterways clean. Some people would ask why? Well, there are many reasons why to volunteer. One of them being the most important is to give back to our community, as mentioned in the City of Pasadena website. So, let’s help the city in which our college is located. Let’s adopt the waterway at Cunningham Drive.
In “Beyond Classroom Borders” by Millicent J. Kelly, the author talks about the importance of “Incorporating collaborative service learning activities into university curricula” (Kelly 1). According to Kelly, collaborative service learning combines volunteering with “relevant higher learning objectives” (Kelly 1). Kelly also talks about the effectiveness of incorporating collaborative service learning activities in higher education. She also talks about andragogy, which is a philosophy introduced in the 1970s, by Malcolm S. Knowles, and explains how this philosophy has been accepted through time.
After reading “Beyond Classroom Borders,” many people would relate to its content, mostly adults going to school. In the article, the author writes about how adults do not have a lot of time for projects involving community service or collaborative service learning activities. Such as, “Adopt a Waterway Project”, it is not because people are against this project, or because people do not want to help, but it is simply because many adults do not have time for this kind of projects.
September 7, 2016, at 8:30 a.m., is the day you can make a difference. It is the day people go out and help the community by cleaning the waterway at Cunningham Dr. It is the day the next “Adopt a Waterway project” is going to be held. So, why not help the city of Pasadena by volunteering at this wonderful project. By volunteering, not only are you helping the city, but you are also making a difference in society. So, let’s make a difference. Go to the City of Pasadena website and register as a volunteer to participate in the next “Adopt a Waterway” project.
Do you live in an area that constantly floods when it rains? If so, you might be interested in adopting a waterway. Why? Because, by adopting a waterway, you will help the city of Pasadena to maintain the waterways clean and unclogged. This means you would probably experience less flooding in your area. Another reason to adopt a waterway is to teach children the importance of taking care of the environment.
So, the questions now are, so what? Who cares? Now what? Well, now that I explained the waterway project in full detail, it is up to the citizens of this great nation, to go and apply to be a volunteer in the next waterway project. People might ask who cares? Many individuals from the City of Pasadena definitely care because it is their city and they want to keep it clean. Now what? Well, now it is time for every individual that wants to make a difference in society to become a volunteer to help the City of Pasadena in their next projects, such as the “Adopt a Waterway project.”
